Thrown into the lion’s den as punishment for his faith, the prophet Daniel emerges unscathed. The beasts are tamed as God appears surrounded by a host of angels and accompanied by the symbolic image of the Messiah on the cross, as referred to in the Book of Daniel. Pietro da Cortona, one of the leading exponents of Baroque painting, sent this altarpiece from Rome, providing the Venetian painters with an invaluable example of the developments in Roman Baroque culture.
