Guided tour to the exhibition Elective Affinities

Art speaks an eternal and universal language. Centuries apart, its manifestations create meaningful dialogues. Starting from this assumption, some masterpieces from the Berggruen Museum in Berlin are paired with Renaissance and 18th-century artworks from the Gallerie dell'Accademia. This exposition stimulates new thoughts and opens new dialogues. We present an unprecedented look to the genres' evolution in the history of art. We invite you to listen to what myth characters, artists, ordinary people and even still lives tell each other - even if centuries apart - in a cross-reference between the creations of Klee and Bosch, Giacometti and Canova, Matisse and Giorgione. Above all, you'll see how the works of Picasso manage to converse with most of the genres present in the Gallerie. Visitors will be able to see that although artistic techniques and historical settings change, the human need to transfer into art yearnings, sensations and glimpses of the beauty that surrounds us remains unchanged over the centuries.

De Kooning's travels in Italy. Encounters, techniques, successes

In September 1959, Willem de Kooning traveled to Rome, where he would remain until early 1960. In new surroundings, he synthesized from all around him, observing classical art and Italian contemporary developments. He entered the city's social and artistic life, encountering fresh ideas which led to innovative techniques. A significant body of black and white works on paper resulted from his Roman sojourn, signalling bold new directions in the paintings he made upon his return to New York. A decade later, de Kooning returned to Italy, where he worked with clay for the first time. The small, experimental figures that emerged would lead to his subsequent engagement with sculpture in the 1970s.

This tour will examine three decades of de Kooning's painting, sculpture, and drawing through the lens of these two Italian visits, showing the profound impact they had on his subsequent work. De Kooning's exploration of new processes, materials, and techniques demonstrates a lifelong commitment to renewal and change – the creative force behind one of the twentieth century's most dynamic and vital visual lexicons.
