The loggia contains a long, rhythmic sequence of narrative reliefs. First of all there are the plaster casts of four funeral steles by Antonio Canova, among the artist’s finest work for the brevity and incisiveness of its narrative thrust. Particularly important are the original plaster models for six metopes, Canova’s very last creative works. The sequence comes to a close with two casts belonging to the series of bas reliefs showing episodes from Homer, which were never sculpted in marble but stayed at the plaster stage. A slightly isolated monumental group of the Pietà by Bartolomeo Ferrari stands alone. The room also contains the large plaster casts for two lions from the monument to Pope Clement XIII at Saint Peter’s, testament to the sculptor’s extraordinary ability to render natural effects.
