Mazzoni offers a unique interpretation of the traditional iconography of the Virgin’s Annunciation, with the celestial messenger on the right acrobatically descending upon the scene from above, as the movement of his hair seems to suggest. Mazzoni’s whimsical and exuberant style and compositional choices make him one of the most original artists of the mid-seventeenth-century Venetian art scene.
