As if they were silently conversing with the Canovas, masterpieces by the Venetian painter Francesco Hayez are in one of the rooms behind the Palladian loggia, including Aristides, his ideal companion pieces Solon and Rinaldo and Armida. The room also contains his The Destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem and the intense 1878 Self-Portrait, works considered to be a sort of spiritual testament by Hayez. There are also a few test pieces by Giovanni Demin, including Ajax and Hercules at the Crossroads.
