The painting depicts Saint Mark miraculously using an unguent of dirt and spittle to heal the wound of the cobbler Anianus. The miracle, which Jacobus da Varagine in his Golden Legend compares to that of Christ healing a blind man, induces pagans to convert to the true faith preached by the Evangelist in the main square of Alexandria.
