This work, from the main altar in Santa Maria Maggiore, is typical of Veronese’s paintings, his skilful use of architecture creating a stage-like backdrop to the figures. The apostles line the staircase and stand around the Virgin’s empty tomb, looking on as she ascends towards heaven after her death. Veronese’s broad use of colour serves to draw the painting together, creating an effect that is both dynamic and harmonious.
