The works displayed here are from Giovanni Bellini’s mature production. From the late ’80s on, much use was made of an innovative, horizontally developed format. On the one hand, the new format allowed for a greater expansion of the figures, and on the other it afforded more importance to the sky and landscape within which the sacred scene was set. In many of these works, which were executed around the turn of the century, the artist demonstrates his ability to renew his expressive language by moving towards a softer colour palette and a warmer, more diffuse light.
