The Gallerie own seven of the eleven canvases painted by Veronese for the Franciscan church of San Nicolò della Lattuga, which was demolished in the nineteenth century. Alongside the Crucifixion and Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata, this is the depiction of the investiture of Saint Nicholas to the bishopric. Originally four-lobed like the Saint Francis, with which it was positioned on the ceiling, the painting was cropped to its current form in the nineteenth century, thus depriving the scene of Veronese’s trademark monumentality.
